Famous South Indian Sweet: Chakkera Pongali (Sweet Pongali) recipe

Sweet pongal is also known as Chakkera pongali. It is a famous South Indian sweet is traditionally made with rice, sugar and milk. Chakkera Pongal is a traditional sweet made usually on Pongal (Sankranti). It finds a place during any festival or special occasion as well.

During the Sankranti festival this dish is prepared with the harvest rice. This is a very simple and tasty dish for any time. I don’t need a reason to make this sweet dish. This can be done using any kind of rice, but using a sticky rice would keep the dish in shape. Do not use any rice that cooks dry like Basmati rice.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/3 cup moong dal(split yellow moong dal)
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups water
  • Cashew nuts and raisins
  • 1 tsp crushed cardamom powder
  • 4 tsp ghee

Method of Preparation

  • Wash rice and moong dal , cook in 3 cups of water.
  • When rice and dal cooked add sugar and milk.
  • Cook on low flame for few minutes till becomes very soft.
  • Take a pan heat the ghee and fry cashew nuts and raisins till golden brown in colour.
  • Add these along with the ghee to the rice and dal mixture.Mix well.
  • Now sweet pongal is ready.It can be serve with ghee.
