Vadapappu for Srirama Navami

Ram Navami also known as Sri Rama Navami is a Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya of Ayodhya.The Sree Rama Navami festival falls in the Shukla Paksha on the Navami, the ninth day of the month of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar. Thus it is also known as Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami, and marks the end of the nine-day Chaitra-Navratri celebrations.

On this day we prepare Panakam (Telugu) or Panaka (hindi), a festive sweet drink prepared with jaggery and flavored with cardamom and pepper.We also prepare Vada Pappu (split yellow moong dal) as naivedyam.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Moong Dal (Pesarapappu)
  • 2 tsp grated Coconut
  • 2 finely chopped Green Chilli
  • 2 tsp chopped raw Mango (can be substituted with 1 tsp of Lemon Juice)
  • A handful of finely chopped Cilantro (Optional)
  • Salt to taste

Method to prepare:

  • Wash and soak the dal in water for half an hour. Then drain it.
  • Take them in a bowl. Add chopped green chillies and raw mango pieces.
  • Sprinkle salt and coconut gratings.
  • Mix well and it was offered as prasadam.
