Bellam pongali / Jaggery pongali - recipe

Bellam Pongali is a sweet dish which is prepared as an offering to God in almost every home in Andhra on most special occasions and festivals. This is a very simple and tasty dish for any time.

What do you need?

  • 1 cup Rice
  • 1/4 cup Moong dal (pesaru pappu)
  • 1 cup Jaggery (bellam)
  • 1/2 litre Milk
  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • A few Cashew and Raisins

Cooking procedure:

  • Wash the rice and the dal with water.
  • Then cook together, with three cups of water till soft.
  • When rice and dal cooked add jaggery and allow it to melt on low flame.
  • Then add the milk to it and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Take an another pan heat the ghee and fry cashew nuts and raisins till golden brown in colour.
  • Finally add the cardamom powder, cashew and raisins.
  • Turn-off the flame and serve with ghee.
