How to make Modak?

INGREDIENTS:

For the stuffing
  • 2 cups grated fresh coconut
  • 1 cup grated jaggery
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder 
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds(optional)
For Modak covering
  • 1 Cup rice flour 
  • 1 tsp ghee 
  • 1 and half Cup water 
  • A pinch of Salt

METHOD OF PREPARING MODAK:


To make stuffing:
  • Heat ghee in a vessel, add poppy seeds.
  • Add jaggery and grated coconut. Keep stirring continuously on medium flame.
  • Now add cardamom powder and let the mixture cook till it becomes a little dry. 
  • The coconut jaggery filling is ready.Let it cool, Keep aside.

To make Rice flour dough:
  • Boil water add salt,ghee and the rice flour to it.
  • Keep stirring the mixture to avoid any lumps and to make smooth dough.
  • If the mixture becomes dry, sprinkle little water.
  • Now turn off heat and transfer the dough into another bowl.Let it cool.

To make Modak:
  • Grease the palms of your hands and make small balls from the dough.
  • Flatten the dough to make a bowl shape.
  • Put 1 tsp coconut filling into this and bring the edges together on top and join to a modak shape.
  • Prepare all modaks this way.
  • Place and Steam the modaks for 7-10 mins in a pressure cooker or idly cooker on a medium flame.
  • Turn off heat and let it cool.
  • The modaks are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha.
